Rabbits, Scenic Views, and Poison Gas History: Cycling on Okunoshima / Takehara City, Hiroshima Prefecture
Okunoshima is a remote island in Takehara City, Hiroshima Prefecture.
It’s a hugely popular tourist spot known as “Rabbit Island,” where you can interact with friendly rabbits.
The number of rabbits is said to exceed 500!
While it’s a dream destination for lovers of fluffy animals, the island is also known as “the island erased from the map” due to its wartime poison gas factory.
Okunoshima is a small island with a 4 km circumference that holds both light and shadow.
We’ll introduce Okunoshima from two perspectives: unique island activities and tours of historical sites related to poison gas production.
What is Setouchi Finder?
“Setouchi Finder” shares the charms of the seven prefectures surrounding the Seto Inland Sea (Hyogo, Okayama, Hiroshima, Yamaguchi, Tokushima, Kagawa, and Ehime) with the world.
It is a community-based media platform by the Setouchi Tourism Authority, aimed at encouraging more visitors by showcasing the beauty of the Seto Inland Sea—often called the “world’s most beautiful inland sea”—together with local photo writers, residents, and Setouchi enthusiasts.
