Tadanoumi Gion Festival and Mikoshi Events

~ History and Origins of the Tadanoumi Gion Festival ~
The Tadanoumi Gion Festival is held at Yasaka Shrine, located within the grounds of Tadanoumi Kaihatsu Hachiman Shrine. It is a traditional festival said to date back to the late Edo period, where people pray for maritime safety, business prosperity, and good health.

~ Highlights and Overview ~
The festival is designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Hiroshima Prefecture due to the unique way the portable shrine (mikoshi) is handled.
The sight of 16 carriers tilting the 600 kg mikoshi from side to side and thrusting it high into the air is both powerful and moving.

5:00 AM – Shinto Rituals
6:00 AM – Mikoshi Departure (Benzaiten Shrine) / Procession through town
Around 2:00 PM – Performance (Uchibori Park)
