Okunoshima is a small island with a circumference of about 4 km, located about 15 minutes by boat from Tadanoumi Port in Takehara City. It lies just west of the Shimanami Kaido, which connects the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. As part of the Setonaikai National Park, visitors can enjoy the changing natural scenery throughout the four seasons. The island features a swimming beach, campgrounds, and spacious lawns and grounds adorned with tropical plants. At Kyukamura Ohkunoshima, the island’s only accommodation spot, you can enjoy meals, overnight stays, and hot springs. Additionally, many rabbits live on the island, attracting many tourists throughout the year.

Dining and Accommodation on Okunoshima

Kyukamura Ohkunoshima: A resort-like getaway

Kyukamura Ohkunoshima is the only accommodation facility on the island. There are also dining and hot spring facilities available for day-trippers (the last ferry to Tadanoumi Port is at 6:30 PM). If you want to fully enjoy the local seafood, we recommend staying overnight for the buffet. The gift shop sells “Usanchu” (rabbit person) goods and local Takehara sake. They make great memories of your trip.

Getting around Okunoshima

Explore the island with a rental bicycle

Walking is the primary way to get around Okunoshima, but you can explore the island comfortably by renting a bicycle at Kyukamura Ohkunoshima (standard, electric-assist, and children’s bikes are available). Rental fees for standard bikes are 400 yen for guests and 600 yen for day-trippers every 2 hours. For electric-assist bikes, it’s 700 yen for guests and 900 yen for day-trippers every 2 hours. Day-trippers must pay a 1,000 yen deposit (refunded after use). Reservations for rental bikes are not accepted.
By the way, a free shuttle bus runs between Okunoshima Pier and Kyukamura Ohkunoshima.

Leisure on Okunoshima

Enjoy camping, swimming, and tennis!

While known as a rabbit paradise, Okunoshima also offers plenty of leisure activities. Rental services are well-equipped with tents, BBQ grills, blankets, and cooking utensils. For camping beginners, you can enjoy “Hands-free Camping,” which includes a full set of gear and a buffet for dinner and breakfast. The island also features 11 tennis courts (omni and hard courts). Since it’s surrounded by the sea, the beach is popular in the summer, and an outdoor pool is also open.

Views from Okunoshima Island

Experience the beauty of the Seto Inland Sea islands as it changes from morning to night

Okunoshima is famous not only for its rabbits but also for its beautiful scenery. The view of the many islands in the Seto Inland Sea and the sunset from the ferry are particularly stunning. We also recommend watching the sunset while soaking in the hot springs at Kyukamura Ohkunoshima.
