Kagi Castle served as a key base for the Numata Kobayakawa clan as they expanded their influence across the sea.
Built on a small hill 25 m above sea level that juts out into the sea, it served as a key strategic point for controlling transportation routes and maritime access.
The castle lord was Ura Munakatsu (also known as Nomi Munakatsu), the commander of the Kobayakawa naval forces.
He is well known for his diplomatic skill in securing the Murakami Suigun navy as allies during the Battle of Itsukushima.
The site is now maintained as a park, with earthworks still visible on the north side of the second enclosure (Ni-no-maru).
The nearby Shoon-ji Temple houses Munakatsu’s grave and related artifacts, while the deep bay to the west of the ruins is said to have been a ship basin in the past.
