This historic shrine dates back to 1194 (Kenkyu 5), when Goto Hyoe Sanemoto, a retainer of the Kamakura Shogunate, enshrined a branch spirit of Usa Hachiman-gu Shrine as the Goto family’s guardian deity.
Following Sanemoto’s passing, local residents built a shrine at the foot of Mt. Hofuku. It was later moved to its current location in 1658 (Manji 1) by the Shinto priest Karasaki Masanobu.
The shrine grounds contain the “Chukogan,” a historical site associated with the mid-Edo period imperial loyalist Karasaki Hitachinosuke Sekisai, which is designated as a prefectural historic site.
With monuments such as a commemorative stone featuring an inscription by Tokutomi Soho, it is a peaceful place that still breathes with history and philosophy today.
