A “Shaso” is a granary built to store grain in preparation for natural disasters and famine.
The Fukuda Shaso was built in 1780 in Fukuda Village (now Fukuda-cho, Takehara City), following the establishment of the community granary system ordered by the Hiroshima Domain for all villages in 1747.
For approximately 90 years until 1874, this historic building supported the lives of local people as a rice granary used to prepare for potential famines.
Built adjacent to the residence of the Hotta family, who were the village headmen at the time, this single-story structure measures approximately 8.2 meters wide by 3.6 meters deep.
Though simple, it is a precious historical site that conveys the wisdom and prayers of the community to protect their region.
