In May 2019, Takehara City was officially added as a constituent municipality of the Japan Heritage site “A Strange Space Spun by the Dreams of Men Who Overcame the Rough Seas
: Kitamaebune Ports of Call and Shipowner Settlements,” which is recognized by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.
One of the five cultural properties related to the Kitamaebune is the “Joyato Stone Lanterns,” which served as landmarks for ships entering the port.
As a port of call for these ships, the “Takehara Joyato” is also one of these cultural properties.
The lantern is inscribed with “Tenchi Kaido Issai Shoshin” (All Gods of Heaven, Earth, and Sea) on the east, “September 1816 / Wataya Seibeimon and Ebisuya Mohei of this town” on the north, “Shoten Sho-bosatsu” (All Deities and Bodhisattvas) on the west, and “Konpira Daigongen” (The Great Incarnation of Konpira) on the south.
