During the time when the salt industry flourished alongside Ebisu Shrine, this shrine was worshipped as the guardian deity of the districts known as Kamiichi and Shimoichi.
Together with Ebisu Shrine, it stands as one of the valuable historic sites serving as a boundary deity in modern urban development.
The original building was destroyed by a fire in Shimo-ichi Village in 1602.
The current building was constructed in 1927.
