Chōzen-ji Temple, founded during the Kenkyū era (1190–1199), was originally located in Nishino Village, Kamo District (now Sōtoku, Nishino-chō, Takehara City) and was a Tendai sect temple known as “Ōuchiyama Chōzen-an.”
In Eishō 11 (1514), it converted to Jōdo Shinshū under the monk Genchibō Zen’e and changed its name to Chōzen-ji.
After that, it was damaged twice—once in Eiroku 5 (1562) and again in Keichō 19 (1614).
There is also a tradition that in Keichō 19, when Fukushima Masanori’s forces passed through Kawarasaka, they burned the temple because it was too dark.
It was moved to Irino Village, Toyota District in Genna 1 (1615), but was destroyed by fire again in Genji 1 (1864).
In Meiji 7 (1874), it was relocated to its current site by the 18th head priest, Oshō Daijun, and remains here today.
