[Shunpukan]
The residence of Rai Shunpu, uncle of the famous scholar Rai Sanyo.
The building features a samurai-style gatehouse (nagayamon) and a traditional earthen floor (doma).
Rai Shunpu (1753–1825) studied medicine and Confucianism in Osaka before returning to his hometown in 1773 to open a medical practice.
In 1780, he entered the salt production business, and in 1781, he built Shunpukan.
He passed the family’s dyeing business (Konya) to his uncle, Dengoro.
The back of the building houses a tea room within a shrine hall, with the interior designed in a consistent sukiya style.
The original structure burned down in 1854 and was rebuilt in 1855; it is currently designated as a National Important Cultural Property.
[Fukkokan]
Located adjacent to the west side of Shunpukan, this is a two-story, gabled wooden building with a tiled roof, built in the sukiya style.
The history of Fukkokan began in 1859 when Kozono, the adopted son of Rai Shunpu, established a branch family for his third son, Saburo.
The family operated salt and sake brewing businesses, and the grounds include a mill, rice granary, storage cellar, and the “Shin-zashiki” (the former Mitsumoto residence).
Built in 1883, this two-story hip-and-gable structure still retains its original “bucho” (lifting shutters) in the shop area.
