Highlights & What to Do

Tadakiyo (Tadasuga) was Sanyo’s grandfather. His given name was Matajuro, and in his later years he went by the pen name Ko-o.
While running a dyer’s shop, he studied waka poetry under Masugi Koyasu and wrote works such as “Azuma Travelogue,” “Takatsuno Travelogue,” and “Yoshino Travelogue.”
His sons—Shunsui, Harukaze, and Kyōhei—were all outstanding talents, so much so that the Bingo Province Confucian scholar Kan Chazan praised them as “three brothers of the same spirit.” Shunsui’s son, Sanyō, also often visited his uncle Harukaze, who understood him well.
The property consists of a main house with a multi-tiered roof, an irimoya (hip-and-gable) structure, and hon-gawara tile roofing, along with a detached sitting room facing the road; both are built in a plastered (nurigome) style.
In the backyard, there is a stone monument engraved with a poem Sanyō wrote when he was 45.
There are many highlights, including the extremely thick plastered walls typical of Edo-period merchant houses.
