A Trip to a World Heritage Site and Rabbit Island
Recommended Season: Spring / Summer / Fall / Winter
Large quantities of poison gas weapons were once secretly manufactured on Okunoshima.
To conceal the reality of these operations, the island was treated as a blank space on Army maps, leading it to be known as “the island erased from the map.”
Today, the island has been developed as a vacation village (Kyukamura), where ruins of batteries and storage facilities remain quietly amidst the peaceful nature.
The Okunoshima Poison Gas Museum opened in 1988 to convey the history of the many sacrifices made and to wish for lasting peace.
Many people still visit today as a place of learning.
