Highlights & What to Do

Shoun-ji Temple, whose mountain name is Gangetsuzan, is an old Soto Zen temple founded by Ura Munekatsu, lord of Kagi Castle, as his family temple.
The founding priest is said to have been Priest Itten Keiboku.
Uramune Munekatsu was a member of the Kobayakawa clan. He led a naval force under Kobayakawa Takakage and earned a fearsome reputation in the Ishiyama War (1570–1580).
The temple preserves valuable treasures, including a lacquered palanquin associated with Priest Itten Keiboku and an ammunition transport storehouse that Takakage gifted to Munekatsu. A memorial tower enshrining Munekatsu’s hair also still stands on the grounds.
Munekatsu’s castle, Kagijo Castle, was built on Shiroyama along the coast southwest of Tadanoumi Station, and came to be called “Kagijo (Kagijo Castle)” because its layout resembled a key.
