Highlights & What to Do

In May 2019, Takehara City was added as a member of the Japan Heritage site “A Strange Space Spun by the Dreams of Men Who Overcame the Rough Seas: Kitamaebune Ports of Call and Shipowner Settlements.”
The Former Yoshii Family Residence is one of the cultural properties that make up this heritage site.
Built around 1690, this townhouse is one of the oldest buildings in Takehara.
It was the residence of Takehara’s leading salt wholesaler, and records show that Kitamaebune sailors used to stay here.
Because the lords of the Hiroshima Domain frequently visited to inspect the salt marshes, the Honjin Gate and Honjin Garden (Onari-zashiki reception room) still exist today.
The building itself speaks volumes about the history of wealth and exchange brought by the Kitamaebune ships.
