A Kid-Centered Takehara Fun Plan

Why not enjoy Takehara with your children? This recommended plan includes meeting the rabbits on Okunoshima Island and spending some quality time at a large park with spacious lawns and fun playground equipment.

Day 1

1.

Okunoshima Island

A must for rabbit lovers: the island known as “Rabbit Island.”
First, let’s go get some bunny therapy!
About 15 minutes by boat from Tadanoumi Port in Takehara City. This small island, about 4 km around, was once home to a poison gas factory and was called “the island erased from maps.” Now designated as a national park, it’s known for being home to around 500–600 rabbits, and visitors from Japan and abroad come to relax and unwind.
On the island you’ll find facilities such as Kyukamura Okunoshima, where you can enjoy stays, hot springs, and local food, as well as the Poison Gas Museum and the Okunoshima Visitor Center. At Kyukamura Okunoshima, you can also enjoy camping, cycling, tennis, fishing, and more, and in summer the swimming beach and outdoor pool open too.
It’s an island where you can spend a laid-back time, soothed by rabbits amid the beautiful nature of the Seto Inland Sea.
For details, see Okunoshima (Rabbit Island).

~ A Request ~
Vegetable leftovers and a lot of trash are being left on the island. To protect the environment and the rabbits, please take your waste home with you. Thank you for your cooperation.

This is Takehara City’s general sports park, themed around “bamboo,” the city tree of Takehara.
The Bamboo House consists of an exhibition room, craft workshop, and Japanese-style room (tea room). In addition to hands-on learning about bamboo ecology, it also features a bamboo-based sound instrument resembling a pipe organ.
Along the ridge in the wooded area, there are walking paths connecting the facilities, where you can take a leisurely stroll and enjoy forest bathing.
Stop by the sea-view and mountain-view observation decks set at scenic points, take a break, and you’ll feel refreshed.
The park has about 20 varieties and around 1,300 cherry trees, and you can enjoy cherry blossoms from mid-March to late April.
With sports facilities such as a multipurpose ground and gym, a lawn plaza, and large play equipment for children, it’s used by a wide range of people from kids to seniors.
