In 1587, Kōno Michinao of Iyo, who had fled to Takehara after being defeated by the Kobayakawa army, passed away from illness. In his memory, Kobayakawa Takakage established this temple and donated 200 koku of land as temple property.
In 1644, the monk Kaiben from Fukuyama revived the temple, converting it to the Shingon sect.
The current main hall was built in 1962, and the temple grounds include the Konpira Shrine, Daishi Hall, and Kōshin Hall.
