A morning in a new place is a special moment to feel the local way of life. Let’s walk through the quiet streets where the cool, clear air feels wonderful. While the Takehara Townscape Preservation District is usually a bustling tourist spot, this morning you’ll see residents out early walking their dogs or moving about on bicycles.

Grand estates, historic temples, and even the steam rising from breweries as they steam rice—these have been everyday sights for the people here, both past and present. If you look closely at the townscape, you’ll find unique amber-colored lattices with beautiful paper-cut-like designs, plaster walls stretching into the distance, and the blue sky reflected with a slight wobble in old glass windows. You’ll find yourself captivated by a townscape that still carries the essence of life from 350 years ago.

Decorations made from traditional bamboo crafts, flowers adorning the eaves, and streetlights illuminating the still-dark morning paths all seem to say “Welcome!” You can feel that the spirit of hospitality has been passed down through generations. Suddenly, a delicious aroma wafts from somewhere. It’s almost time for breakfast. I’ve already scouted out the shops to visit today while on my walk. Now, another wonderful day begins.
