With a history of flourishing in the Heian period as an estate of Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto, Takehara is known as the “Little Kyoto of Aki.”
The symbol of the city is the Townscape Preservation District, a nationally designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings that exudes a calm, historic atmosphere.
During the Edo period, when the area flourished as a salt-producing hub, its economic prosperity fostered many great scholars, including the Rai brothers (Shunsui, Shumpu, and Kyohei) and Rai Sanyo.
The stately homes born from the prosperity of salt fields and merchant culture still convey the town’s former 모습 to this day.
